FREDERICK KEYS - The Keys started off the week with three straight wins but only
finished 4-4, and now trails first place Wilmington by nine games in the
Northern Division. Doug Gredvig put together a nice week in which he led the
team in hits (8), runs (4), RBI (6) and on-base percentage (.500). Christopher
Ray turned in the best start of the week with a seven-inning complete game,
three-hit shutout in which he struck out ten batters.
KINSTON INDIANS - Kinston capped a brilliant 6-1 week with four straight
victories to improve to 35-19. The first half champions of the Southern Division
of the Carolina League own a two-game lead over Winston Salem. The Kinston
offense was dominating again as they led the league with a .310 batting average
and 40 RBI. In addition, Indians pitching was solid as well leading the League
with a 2.00 ERA all while holding opponents to a .202 batting average.
Offensively, Pat Osborn led the way batting .458 (11-24) with eight runs scored,
a homer, and seven RBI. Shaun Larkin led the team with nine RBI for the week.
Derrick Van Dusen earned two wins in two starts this week. In eleven innings, he
allowed one earned run on ten hits and five walks. Van Dusen struck out 13 in
his two wins and had a miniscule 0.82 ERA.
LYNCHBURG HILLCATS: The Hillcats posted an even 4-4 mark this past week, but
still own the worst record in the Carolina League's second half standings at
19-36. Ray Navarrete was simply outstanding for the Hillcats this past week,
going 12-for-31 with six runs scored and 10 RBI. Victor Mercedes also drove in
10 runs this past week to go along with his two home runs and three doubles.
Nick Gravelle was nearly unhittable in his two starts this past week, as he
earned a victory while allowing no earned runs over a combined 12 innings of
work. He is now 4-10 on the year with a 3.95 ERA in 24 appearances. Tom
Gorzelanny also turned in a solid effort this past week with victories in both
his starts. In 12 total innings, he allowed just three earned runs while
striking out 13 batters.
MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS - Myrtle Beach posted a 1-0 win against Frederick on
August 22nd, marking the team's third win in its last four games. Although the
Pelicans have started to play much better of late, they are still 8 1/2 games
back in the Carolina League's Southern Division with a record of just 27-28. As
a team, Myrtle Beach hit just .231 this past week and posted only three home
runs. Jeff Francoeur belted two of those homers and was able to bat .438 with
three runs scored and three RBI. Anthony Lerew had one of his worst outings of
the season this past week, lasting just 1 2/3 innings. Lerew allowed eight hits
and five earned runs in that contest and also surrendered two homers.
POTOMAC CANNONS - The Cannons dropped six of eight games this past week,
bringing their second half mark to 23-33, which is good enough for third place
in the Northern Division of the Carolina League. Ryan Hanigan was an impressive
11-for-20 at the plate this past week with three runs scored and four RBI. Joey
Votto also contributed for the Cannons, going 10-for-32 with four runs, three
doubles, two home runs and eight RBI. Ricardo Aramboles was defeated in his
third straight outing on August 22nd, dropping his record to
3-10. In that game against Kinston the young hurler allowed just two runs on six
hits in five innings of work.
SALEM AVALANCHE - The Avalanche lost five of their last six games this past
week, bringing their season mark to 23-33 which places the squad in last place
in the Southern Division of the Carolina League. Adam Seuss collected just three
hits in 21 at-bats for Salem, while teammate Mark Saccomanno also struggled,
going just 5-for-24 at the plate with seven strikeouts. Josh Anderson did not
fair much better as he went just 4-for-26 with eight strikeouts. Fernando Nieve
was very dominant on August 19th against Kinston. In that contest, the young
hurler allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Despite the
strong effort, Nieve did not record the decision, leaving his season mark at
10-6.
WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS - The Blue Rocks finished the week with a loss on Sunday
August 22nd, but still managed to post a 5-3 record. They now sit atop the
Northern Division of the Carolina League by 8 1/2 games at 35-21. Donnie Murphy
had a solid week at the plate going 10-for-30 for a .333 average. Murphy scored
eight runs, belted two home runs and knocked in six. Adam Keim homered twice for
the Blue Rocks for the week. Dusty Hughes and Devon Lowery were the only two
starting pitcher to record wins. Lowery was solid in the first game of a
doubleheader on Friday August 20th against Lynchburg. In five innings he allowed
one earned runs on two hits and one walk. Lowery struck out two in the victory.
Hughes started two games this week and recorded a win in only one contest. He
allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and a walk in six innings in the
6-2 win.
WINSTON-SALEM WARTHOGS - After winning four in a row, the Warthogs were on the
short end of the stick on Sunday August 22nd against the Salem Avalanche. They
did finished the week with a 4-3 record and upped their overall mark to 34-22.
They currently sit in second place in the Southern Division of the Carolina
League. Darren Blakely led the offensive charge as he hit three home runs and
drove in eight RBI on the week. He batted .346 (9-26) with six runs scored.
Kenny Ray pitched a gem against Wilmington on Thursday August 19th.
In six shutout innings he gave up just three hits and struck out three to earn
the win.
