I've been running for a little over a year and love it!! I have three
half marathons under my belt and have my sights on a full. My goal
with running is to do my personal best. Right now I run a comfortable
10:00 mile. I find my long runs to be a challenge! Would anyone like
to train for a marathon or at least run those long runs together?
I'm training for the Richmond Marathon and need a running partner for
a few long weekend runs. I train around 7:00-8:00 pace. Call me at
254.2702 if you're intersted. I love to have some company for a 20
miler on-road this weekend (October 18-19)
I am also using the Bethal Halfmarathon on Saturday as a Long run. This is the 1st year I am running this Half Marathon

As a local runner for charities for the past 7 years, I was
wondering what would be necessary to setup an event to raise
money for Trooper Blanten's family. There is a large running
community in the western NC area that I have noticed, and most races I
have attended range is size from 500 runners to close to 2000
runners. The average entry fee is 25.00 and I think that a
Race in the Honor of Trooper Blanten and future troopers who
may loose there lives in the line of duty would raise
several hundred dollars in a single event and I wish to have
the first event in NC in the honor of Fallon troopers of NC.
I am a member of the Asheville Track Club and I feel confident that
the organization could setup this event.

John,
Welcome to Asheville. I have lived here for almost thirty years and think you will really be pleased with your decision. The ATC website is a pretty good resource for people who are new to the area. There are number of group runs in the Asheville/Hendersonville area along with at least one track work out. I run on Sunday mornings with an ATC group (anyone is welcome) at the NC Arboretum and enjoy the work out. We normally run for around 75 minutes but will be ramping that up as we start a marathon training on June 29. The group normally breaks into four sub groups with paces from 7:30 min mile to ten minutes plus. Why don't you come out one Sunday? We meet at the greenhouse at 0830AM and normally start running at 0840AM. Parking is $6.00 but I think they will sometimes let you slide in for free if you explain you are running with the group. If it grows on you the Arboretum sells a year long parking pass for $2
0.00! A bargain! Even if you don't make it a weekly run you will meet some other WNC runners.
Best wishes, Paul

Hello fellow runners,
I just moved into town a few weeks ago from Tallahassee Fl (Gulf Winds
Track Club) I'm looking to learn a little more about Asheville and the
local running community. As of now the only real place I have been
running is the Bent Creek area...not exactly use to all those hills

I have been running for a little over three years. I have 4 marathons

December back in Tallahassee. All that being said though..I'm a slow
runner but I love it, it's great medicine.
Again looking forward to meeting and running with you all.

I don't have any experience with two of the races but I have run the Reggae 5k before. The Rutherford race advertises itself as "FLAT, FAST, & PRETTY 5K RUN" but I couldn't find any past results. Maybe it's first year?? Same with the Mountain Medley. One disadvantage, maybe is that it is a combined 5K and 10 mile. However, it does run around a lake so you would think it would have to be flattish!
From past experience I can tell you that the Reggae 5K seems to have good times and is relatively flat. The top three places last year were 16:08, 16:31, and 17:10. As you can maybe guess from the name of the race it is somewhat loosely organized (the race started about twenty minutes late last year). This was no problem for me and added to the appeal. The atmosphere is very fun and I liked actually tie dying the race T-shirt after the race was done. I vote for the Reggae 5K.

Looking at the Calendar, there are at least 3 5K options this weekend -
- Reggae 5K, Mountain Medley, and something in Rutherfordton. Does
anyone know which is the fastest course?

I saw an ad in "Running Times" Mz for Rock-to-Rock (R2R)in late May or
early June 2008, but do not see it listed as part of the Grand Prix
series as it was last year.
I would like to see R2R included in the GP series this year. Is there
some reason why it is not listed? I thought it was one of the most
adventurous and fun runs of the 2007 GP season, very similar, but
