Title:   Pumpkin Pedaller

Date:   Friday October 31, 2008
Time:   6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Location:   City County Plaza to The Wedge
Notes:   AoB,
Asheville on Bikes presents the Pumpkin Pedaller – a Halloween tour through Asheville's ghoulish grounds.
Friday, October 31st Halloween Evening

The fun begins at 6:30 at City County Plaza and culminates at 8:30 at the Wedge Gallery's Halloween Bash . Of course, costumes are customary.

The ride isn't strenuous, but there are a few short climbs so design your costume to be bike functional. Be well illuminated and wear your helmet.

ProBikes, Liberty and BioWheels wants you to be properly equipped for the ride so save $2 on bike lights or a bell with an AoB handbill.

You'll want a little spending money for the evening, as well. We'll arrive at the Wedge Bash just in time for hot music, dance, refreshing beverages supplied by The Wedge and light fare. $10 at the door for Asheville's premier 21st century traditional jazz, The Firecracker Jazz Band. Food venders will be on the grounds so you can replenish your energy after the ride.

The next AoB event is the Holiday Parade on Nov. 22. The parade theme is "the art and heart of giving." AoB's theme is "Ride your City with Love." More to follow....

There were four of us. All boys, no girls. :( A cop parked across
the street to keep an eye on our ride, and a police van made an
appearance but probably thought it wasn't worth the effort of being
there, and left.

We stripped to undies and went ahead, and quickly lost the cop car
down an alley. There was no full nudity for fear of arrest in our
small numbers. I wish there had been a better turn out, because we
were all prepared to get nekkid had we been in group of about fifteen
strong - as the police presence was minimal-to-none - but alas we were
only four, and easily (and probably unnecessarily) frightened.

We circled town a number of times, making lots of noise. Everyone
cheered wherever we went, lots of smiles, cheers, whoops, and
ironically shouts to get naked. XD There was also lots of picture-
taking, "you rock"s and "you're awesome"s. I think we represented,
and got across the message of the WNBR. It was a really good
experience and I met some cool guys, and only a shame because it could
have been an incredible experience that shook up the town with a horde
of naked protestors. Next year I hope. This is still the only WNBR
in a giant area of the south east US, after all.

If we organize earlier next year, and have better luck with the
weather (a downpour between 12:00 and 1:30 may have turned away
riders, but by 2pm when we left it was just a pleasant soft drizzle -
unlucky timing because the riding condition became perfect on cue),
then next year can hopefully be the one. Everyone else around the
world is having record rides. Viva Asheville!

Thanks for all your help, and to everyone else that got involved
(including of course the three other riders).

Great, and I've ascertained that 14th June is more like the official
date this year so there's plenty of time to organize. I've also
been told that the French Broad Food Coop is the usual meeting
place, so if everyone can confirm this and decide on a definite date
and time, then I'll go ahead and make fliers and advertize on these
active sites below that I'm familiar with. If anyone knows of
anymore good ones then let me know.

Also, I don't live in Asheville any longer but I'm going to be in
town for the ride, so someone else will need to put up the fliers.
However, I do live in nearby Charlotte so I'll put up fliers here
for the Asheville ride, because we don't have one but I know plenty
of people who'd make the trip to have a laugh up there. Here are

Actually I think the general date for the ride is 6/14.  I know that that is what the Chicago (the one I rode in last year) is saying.

Yes, I would be interested in riding.

A Crude Awakening: Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining,
this film visits top experts and comes to a startling but logical
conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily
available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled. Shot on
location in Azerbaijan, Venezuela, the Middle East, and Texas, the film
provides not only questions but possible solutions to the most
perplexing and important economic, environmental and public policy
issues of our time.

In a report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy, Robert L.
Hirsch, Senior Energy Program Advisor, Science Applications
International Corporation) challenged the notion that the free market
can solve the peak oil emergency: "The world has never faced a problem
like Peak Oil. Without massive mitigation more than a decade before the
fact, the problem will be pervasive and will not be temporary. Previous
energy transitions (wood to coal and coal to oil) were gradual and
evolutionary; oil peaking will be abrupt and revolutionary."

If you're new to Asheville you won't want to miss the Bike Love this Saturday at
the
Wedge Gallery in the River Arts District. Doors open at 8pm. It's $12 to get in.
Once
inside you're promised to the best in local music, beet and food.
The event support the bike locker project and Asheville on Bikes, a community
bicycle
advocacy group.
The Wedge Gallery is located off of Robert St behind the Grey Eagle. Follow
Robert to the
stop sign and then make a hard right. Head straight back on the gravel
road/parking lot
toward the bridge. You won't miss the party in action.
  See you there.
