As training for Boston starts, it's time to do some weekend long runs on the Boston course. The last couple years a group of us did many of these long runs and was lots of fun. We'd like to continue this tradition this winter.
When: Starting this weekend, we will run the course on any weekend (Sat or Sun) that have no race or anyother club-member-hosted longruns.
Where to meet: We normally meet outside MIT at the intersection of Mass Ave bridge and Memorial Dr (NOT Storrow Dr). MIT has plenty of free parking on weekends and restrooms we can use for pre/post-runs.
The course: Starting from MIT, we will do an out-and-back on the Boston course for as many miles as you want. Just to give you an idea -- from MIT to Newton firestation (at the intersection of Rt 16) that's about 9 miles. So if you do >18mi out and back, you'll get Heartbreak Hill Deluxe (as Herbert Lin always says). Pace: We're mostly doing 9:00~10:00 pace. (yes, we are the slow ones!) But any pace is welcome.
So if you are interested in this, please email me. I'll put together a seperate email list for this, so I don't need to spam the whole yahoo group.
thanks, Yili

All…following is some bad news from Kathy. Thought everyone
would want to know.
Hello everyone,
I realize that many of our
club members were not at the track workout last night, to hear the news
from our club's coach, Steve Burton. I am including here his message to the club:
"Some of you may have
noticed that I have not been at track for the past few weeks. Unfortunately
this is due to a rather abrupt diagnosis of severe cancer. The complete
diagnosis/treatment plan has not yet been determined. As of this
point in time, I will not be able to fulfill my coaching duties. While I know many of you
will want to express your concern, I ask you to respect my privacy at
this very difficult time and NOT to email or call me. I have a very good
support system - I'm in good hands. I know I have the support of SRR -
although some of you might think twice after tonight's track
workout. The best support you can give me is to continue with your running
goals and train hard."
I understand this is very
difficult news for us all to learn, and we are all hoping for the best
outcome.
Folks,
Please feel free to use the calendar feature to maintain the races you
are planning to run.
That way, we can track races automatically!
Regards,
~Kaushik

Just curious what races people are planning to run over the next couple of months. Maybe people have
suggestions of fun races they have run in the past or ones that weren't so well
organized.
My next race is the Derry 16 Miler on 1/29, and
then Martha's Vineyard on 2/18 (20 Miler).
It was great to have 11 participants in last
Wednesday's Arlington 2.8/3.5 Mile Fun Run. Just proves that there are
plenty of people running all winter. I bet we can get 15
easily.
Here is an article about the race weekend Ellenor mentioned:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/1/1_31/3311.shtml
It is Feb. 26. I see there is a marathon relay event, maybe the
Arlington runners can throw a team together.

Hi Josh
I plan to run out of Fitness First tonight. I am going to do a
double loop, so I dont plan on being speedy. Not sure if I will do
the second loop before or after the "usual loop" at 7PM. Hope some
others will be out to enjoy the snow/sleet/rain & whatever else they
throw at us.

Will anyone (else slow) be venturing out into what sounds like wonderful weather to run this evening? I thought I might make a (rare) appearance, but would love to have some company.
Just to let you know that a few of us SRR women will do a long run at 9:30am starting at Fitness First. We will do somewhere from 8 ~ 18 miles. Any one of you are welcome to join us!
Happy New Year!

Mike is not an OB, but he has seen me - a once avid runner - through the last 8.5 months of my pregnancy. But if since this is your second pregnancy, you probably have far more advice for him than he could possibly have for you.
I'm glad you are starting to feel better.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope you survived the first trimester with little difficulty. Good for you for continuing to run. If my husband Mike runs with you all on Saturday, I'm sure he'll have all kinds of advice.
Have a very happy birthday!

Nice to see a few other runners tonight, although I did get there late I ran ~3 mile loop. A few of you expressed interest in joining a group that runs around the Charles river on Sat afternoon. I have tried it once - area is nice, starts at Marsh Chapel of Boston U on Commonwealth. This group runs Sats at 330 or 345pm (check w/ Will) for distances 3-6 miles. It's nice because the sun is still around, and the path along the Charles is great.
Excellent recommendation. I've joined the Princeton NJ group. Very fun

All SRR runners are doing very well here. Kaushik, thanks so much for listing the results! The results below are actually clock time, not chip time. The chicagomarathon.com just updated the results with chip time. So here are our chip time:
Jerome Lang -- 04:08:48, pace is 9:29. Jerome did more than 17 min PR!!! Winn Gatewood -- 04:16:15, pace is 9:46. Congrats Winn on finishing her first marathon!!!
Yili Yao -- 03:39:31, pace is 8:22. I did a 6 min PR.
Congrats everyone who did awesome at BAA half!

Hi all,
Big congratulations to Sarah, 3rd in her age group and
part of the 1st place women's Veterans team. (Kaushik
got things a bit mixed up.) She ran a 2-minute PR!
Huge congratulations to Kaushik, too. His first ever
half marathon. He was hoping to run 2:20 but beat
that by 3-1/2 minutes. He's come a long way since
last fall, when he was struggling with the 3-mile fun
run. Great job, Kaushik!
Congrats to Michael, too. I believe this was his
first half marathon, too, but I might be wrong.
SRR did well in the teams. SRR was 3rd in the Men's
Open division. Men's Masters did well, too (3rd).
And, of course, the women's Veterans team was 1st.
I was pretty happy with how I ran. I didn't know if
my Achilles (and hip, knee, and shins) would hold up,
but it did. From the start, I knew I wasn't going to
break 1:30:00, and even sub-7:00 pace looked out of
reach. But I felt surprisingly strong as the race
progressed and even managed to sprint the last 50-100
yards to catch fellow SRR runner Bob Pomeroy.
Nice running, everyone!

Ben did the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. It was his
first half marathon and his goal was to finish under 2 hours. In
fact, he finished in 1:42.45, a 7:51 pace. Nicely done!
At today's CapeAnn 7K, Jonathan placed FIRST in his
age group and was 7th overall. Great job! :)
Jerome, I know you had an awful race due to
dehydration and leg cramping, but I hope you feel
better soon. Happy B-day! :)

Hi, if you need a nice quiet place to run, I highly recommend Battle Rd trail at the Minuteman National Historic Park (near Rt 2A/Hanscom Airforce base). One end of the trail starts near MIT Lincoln Lab, it goes about 4.5 miles and ends at Meriams corner at Bedford. So if you do an out-and-back, it'll be about 9 miles, or you can turn back earlier to make it shorter. Steve Pepe knows the trail very well.

Also, is there anyone interested in the group dong an intermediate length group run, relatively easy pace (no race, no timing) on Thurs eve starting at 545 or 6pm?? Perhaps for 5-7 miles. Please share the desired pace range and perhaps a scenic course. (I thnk this would add a medium run to go w/ the shorter 3 mile runs on M and Thur, and longer running during the weekend.)
