Just like most other things- the common practice is to label or blame the
implement and ignore the actions of the persons who use them. Sniper is a job
description, not a type of gun. GRanted certain configurations lend themselves
better to the job at hand, but not so very different from 'Varmint Rifles"
really.
But the public will go on being led around by the nose, believing in Saturday
Night Specials, sniper rifles, assault guns, etc while they pardon the persons
who use them incorrectly or immorally with all kinds of excuses about their
physcological make up and what kind of child hood they had.
The Media??? I remember having to study yellow journalism when I was in grade
school and what a terrible thing it was.. It seems to me that much of the
present media is not much different than the old yellow journalists, just better
at it, trickier and more toungue in cheek.

This is all quite true, but the thing is the word "sniper" has a very
negative connotation with the news media and the sheeple. The only
reason why a news outlet would characterize any rifle with the
term "sniper rifle" is to denigrate it, making it easier for the
sheeple to vote for new restrictions.
