Sniper rifles were part of almost every military rifle system as
each one had special modifications to put them in "sniper rifle"
group. Mods were to make them more accurate over longer distances.
Usually by adding special "scope" sites, etc.
Most rifles from the Mauser, Arisaka (Japan) and the Garand were
modified for this type of longer range shooting.
By the same token many were modified to make them lighter, more
compact, shorter etc. for use by paratroopers. Many had/have folding
stocks, shorter barrels, higher capacity, and some normally semi-
autos have full auto select.
This particular case of shooting police was probably in the range of
25 to 50 yards so there was no need for a "SNIPER CLASS WEAPON".
I have talked with some vets from Korea and VietNam about the Garand
and they all say it was an excellent weapon and probably the best
for it's time. Even the "normal" models were very accurate and
capable of long range shots with very good results.
