Re: National ID

Some points of contention here:

Firstly, drivers licenses are issued by the individual states. They
are state documents. the federal government has no business
dictating to the states what criteria their drivers licenses are
going to follow. When the day comes that the federal government
starts issuing drivers licenses, then it will be their call what form
the licenses take, what documentation is required to get one and who
can get one. State drivers licenses are "de-facto national ID cards"
only because they are accepted as proof of ID in states other that
where you live as a matter of custom. They are not mandated by the
feds to be accepted. The "Real ID Act" explicitly changes that.

Second, our libertarian side cannot go over the top. Remember that
anything that CAN be abused, most certainly WILL be abused, and there
are many, many opportunities for abuse in this.

Thirdly, the feds have proven that they don't care about securing the
borders against illegal immigration. If you have been paying
attention at all to the Minuteman Project, you realize this. The
fact that Border Patrol officers in the area in which the Minutemen
were operating have been specifically ordered to NOT arrest border
jumpers so as not to add proof that the Minuteman Project was
successful puts the period on that sentence (Read the story at
http://washingtontimes.com/national/20050513-122032-5055r.htm if you
don't know what I'm talking about).
