At the end of this year I will be leaving the group. I plan on fulfilling my obligation as show point secretary for 2009. Since there is not a lot of participation I will not be doing it anymore. I would like to thank Gail and all of her students for participating. Since I am only the moderator of the group I feel it is not my duty to keep the group going. I no longer have any ponies, but I will miss hearing all the things that will be going on in the spring. Cathy please email me when Macareena has her foal. I really would love to see the cross with Studly.

Below are the point standings at this time. It would be really nice if we could get a few more sponsors. At the moment Gail and myself are the only ones sponsoring divisions.

Arabian Saddle Company's (ASC) truck and trailer, along with their entire show stock were stolen from the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel on Saturday night after packing up from U.S. Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. The goods alone are worth several hundred thousand dollars. If you or someone you know is offered a significantly reduced price on any of ASC's products, or you see their products advertised anywhere (ebay, local retail store, etc.), other than their official website or from an authorized dealer, please contact the Tulsa Police Department 918-596-COPS (2677) immediately.

Ok, Here is what the owner of pet-law has to say about this bill. I always like his though's.

I sent the first one out to see what people though of it but very few said any thing. Reading the bill it sounds ok but... Like every thing else it has its bad side too.

It would be nice if someone would get on the pet owners side for real for once.

Bill, this is astonishingly bad policy: So bad that I have a hard time

believing you really support it.

First of all, don't call it a tax deduction, call it "An excuse for

borrowing even more money from your kids and grandkids, via the

Chinese." If I have to explain the logic of that, this email is a

total waste, so I won't bother.

Gee, I hope it makes you somewhat embarrassed to think about borrowing

more from the kids ... even at best they're most unlikely to have it

as good as we have.

Second, tax breaks for anything inflate the price of that thing. So

what H.R. 3501 would do is raise the price of pet care products and

services.

Thirdly, a tax break encourages consumption of 'whatever.' Do we

really want to have a money incentive for people to have pets? Aren't

the people who don't have pets often people who shouldn't have them?

You think there might be some pet-related tax scams as a result of

this? Oh, wait -- nobody would cheat on an income tax provision for

pets ...

Fourth, a tax deduction only helps those people who actually pay

taxes. So this would help the upper 55% of filers ... Yep, the lower

income 45% of tax filers pay no tax.

So basically, what this bill would do would be make it easier for

upper income folks to afford pets, and harder (since prices would

rise) for the lower income ones. Is this truly a goal you believe in?

Fifth, is there a chance that allowing a tax deduction for pets could

be another argument for giving them status more like children? Do we

want to even go NEAR there?

That about covers it. You've done good work for pet owners; it's a

shame to see you tarnish that by backing this dumb idea. The only good

news is that this bill has close to no chance of passing.

This is NOT a good thing. Bill Hemby and PetPac are being taken to task by many animal owners because of this email. This is one step closer to the goal of elevating the status of animals beyond property, which then leads to guardianship (not ownership). H$U$, et al, are for this, of course. It's one of the incremental legislative steps envisioned by the AR industry. When I attended an animal law conference in Austin in 2004 (not knowing it was primarily AR-oriented) , this philosophy of incrementalism was expounded by the keynote speaker, David Favre (top person in the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF)). I've attached a PDF of my brief notes from that conference, for anyone who wants a chilling read.

In addition, when the U.S. taxpayers have already been burdened with billions of dollars in debt to bailout corporate entities who got greedy and careless, how on earth can we afford more cuts. The only people who will be able to afford this anyway are those who can afford to spend that kind of money on their pets--which excludes the bottom third to half of taxpayers.

Dear Marie,

How would you like a $3500 tax break? PetPAC enthusiastically supports HR 3501, The HAPPY Act, which will help American families keep their pets by providing tax relief.

Please join us in signing the petition to help make this bill a law.

Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) recently introduced HR 3501, entitled "Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act". This landmark legislation would permit pet owners to deduct up to $3500 from their taxable income for qualified expenses they incurred in providing care for their pets.

PetPAC believes that giving people the opportunity to deduct pet care expenses is a significant step toward ensuring that pets will receive proper health care, and will reduce the number of pets abandoned as a result of difficult economic times.

Share my video about HR 3501 with your friends and family, and ask them to help by contacting their Member of Congress. It is only through our direct action that significant change can happen. For your pets sake please join us today.

Sincerely,

Bill Hemby
Chairman

Marie A.,
Very cute ! They look like they're having a blast. My Arabian mare is
hopefully in foal to my champagne appaloosa pony stallion and I'm
hoping for some color but it's just a 50% chance with my stallion for
appy or champagne. I'm "seriously" considering keeping this years
foal by our stallion. He's a few spot and champagne so I know I'll
get some color with him.

I'm glad to hear AHA did that. I saw pictures of the horse on-line, and his white pattern was NOT something you'd see on a purebred Arabian. I too think that the Arabian is the symbol for "pure in blood", and it's correct, IMO, that even a high percentage of Arabian blood will not make them a purebred. I also think that's why many people are involved with the bloodlines that are straight from the desert.

We know from experience in the U.S. how some people will *tamper* with bloodlines (even including introducing secretively what they want to produce in offspring from another breed, e.g., saddlebred, TB, paint), and it's an issue in all other countries, as far as I know. I've heard stories about virtually every country that has had established Arabian breeding programs of such shenanigans. If a horse is a very high percentage Arabian and phenotypically looks and produces like an Arabian, it has been argued that they should be considered purebred, but personally, I don't agree. There are many registries that were developed from selective breeding of certain breeds to set a type that is desired. That's how new breeds are created. But the Arabian is supposed to be a fountainhead of pure bloodlines, although I have seen a couple of articles that question that claim too. We can't influence or change the past, but we can uphold the present and future of a breed.

No kidding! Of all of the breeds, the Arabian breed should be the
most guarded from this sort of thing. Nothing says purebred to me
like the Arabian so to think that someone was monkeying around and
sneaking one through, well seems to me that a year of work is a lot of
time and money spent and those responsible should have to pay the
expenses incurred by the registry and re-imburse anyone who bought
from them since this happened because who knows what else they have
done. It really sickens me.

That was a horse that had a lot of controversy around it. I think Jean knows more about the story, if it is the same horse I am thinking of. A purebred can have excessive white and still be registered. There are a lot of pinto looking purebreds out there. But I think with this horse the DNA was falsified. I know the case has been going on for over a year. I am glad that AHA finally made a decision on the case.

I just heard that the AHA withdrew papers on a horse that had been
registered as purebred and was tobiano. How in the world did "that"
not get noticed when it was registered??
