6. Second round (Thursday 18th January)

First set: Anna 2-0*, 3-1*, *4-1, 6-2.

Second set: Anna 3-1*, 4-2 (40/15)*, *4-3, 4-4*, *5-4, 5-5*, *5-6,
5-7.
Anna squandered two break-points for *5-2 with Granville serving at
2-4 (15/40).

Third set: Anna 4-0*, 6-1.

Anna had a W:UE ratio of 29:36, which is a vast improvement on her
11:41 of the first round, which was played in extreme heat.

Third-round preview
-------------------

I had been worrying about Anna having to play Samantha Stosur - the
last player she lost to - in front of an Australian crowd, but Stosur
lost 6-4 2-6 6-2 to newlywed Jelena Kostanic Tošic.

I saw Stosur v Kostanic on BBCi from 4-1 in the third. Stosur played
very poorly. Kostanic played quite well, and has replaced her sliced
backhand with a proper two-handed backhand, which the commentators
admitted had "really transformed her game".

But Kostanic looked like she might choke at any moment, so I would
doubt her ability to close out a match against such a gritty,
determined competitor as Anna - not that Anna should find herself in
such a hole in the first place (she won their only previous meeting
6-4 6-3 at San Diego 2006).

It's just as well that Anna's doubles-match was short (just 49
