You are absolutely right about the importance of bieng a good largo player, especially in tournements. I competed in the Marpio Modern Arnis Seminar hosted by Datu Worden and Remy Presas's sons in Tacoma, WA. this weekend. I competed in 3 separate contests. In the first contest, I tried to just hold my ground and litterelly got my butt kicked. However, I was able to learn from the mistake and finally got in the game. I actually won 2 out of three rounds in my last contest. Best bet is to use double O, crossada and abinico strikes until you close.
Unfortunely, if you are sparring with headgear and padded sticks, like we were required to do the headgear takes some getting used to because you cannot see the stick when your opponet strikes overhead. Also, the judges listen for hard strike souinds for scoring. I got many 6 and 7 angle thrusts in and weapon hand strikes in that the judges didn't hear or did'nt see. As this is competition and not reality, you have to make some adjustments. The fun part is that you get strike as hard as you want and get good experience in dealing with an opponent that wants to rush in take you down. Great Fun however, Serrada skill alone just won't get it. You got to learn multliple range skills.
