Tim,
I have had the opportunity to teach several left-handed
practitioners, some of them in GM Angel's acadamy when he was alive.
Since the late GM Angel passed away, I have taught several, two of
which are "Advanced" graduates from my school and one of them is
currently training for "Datu" ranking.
The majority of my students have always been right-handed so I
trained all of them to counter against the right hand. When looking
at the angles of strikes in Cabales Serrada as a left-handed student
being taught by a right-handed instructor, the instructor must
visualize the techniques in an opposite manner. For example, angle
#1 is (#2); angle #3 is (#4); angle #5 is still (#5); angle #6 is
(#7); angle #7 is (#6).
On angle #8, I teach the left-handed student similar angle #2
counters, but I also stress to the "live" hand to, at times, reverse
the #8 into an angle #4. Angle #9 is taught angle #11 counters;
angle #10 and angle #4-dagger strikes, I teach students to pass the
dagger with the "live" hand, countering angle #1 or abanico to the
dagger hand, wrist or arm. The angle #4 strike is then countered
with angle #3 techniques.
Angle #10 is a dagger (angle #6 or #7 counter), reterada and fraile
techniques work good for a lefty countering a righty on this angle of
attack.
Angle #11, low counter #3 and angle #9 counters such as punch-block,
reterada and taking the power, work just as good for a lefty. Angle
#12 is similar to angle #1, #6, #7 and #10 counters, again, using
reterada and fraile techniques.
Also, Tim, on almost any stick-on-stick disarm or lock that a righty
can do to a lefty, the lefty can also do the same. I hope you find
this information to be helpful.
I remember someone asking GM Angel what his theory was on training
Serrada right and left-handed. He said, "If your right handed, train
right-handed, if your left-handed train left-handed because it is
better to be 100% rather than 50% when you fight for real".
