I have recently returned from Grass Valley, California where I played the
Samurai Game® at the Aikido¹Ka Dojo run by Sensei Frank Bloksberg. If you
have never heard of the Samurai Game® it was created by Sensei George
Leonard (who holds a fifth degree black belt) - you can check it out at:
www.samuraigame.org
In short, two teams take on the roles of medieval Samurai each led by a
Daimyo and guided by the code of Bushido (even into death) one team
against the other engaging in a variety of unpredictable contests. There is
no significant physical contact yet every contest requires the utmost
commitment and focus. The atmosphere is chaotic metaphorically everyone¹s
life is at stake and trying to stay centered is a real challenge. Leonard
Sensei once described the game as ³... subtle and complex. Participants are
never quite certain of all the rules or of exactly what¹s going on, or what
may happen next.² As far as I am aware it has been played all over the USA,
in Canada and Mexico, China, Taipei, Poland, Egypt and the UK. It has been
run for corporations and, like the game I attended, as a public course with
participants aged from 13 to those in their 60¹s.
I could say a lot about my experience of the Samurai Game®. For me it was
subtle and profound. So much so that I am bringing Lance Giroux of Allied
Ronin Leadership Training & Consulting to run the Samurai Game® over a
weekend in Brisbane at the end of July. Lance led the game I played and has
been doing so since 1978. We already have participants who have played
twice before with Lance flying over from Perth to take part!

Hello all
If you like to practice Aikido and enjoy camping in the great outdoors or if you
would just prefere to visit Noosa Heads for the weekend or a week of camping you
can do it at any time through the year. Our dojo is housed on the Noosa seas
Scouts nature reserve and the caretaker on the reserve is none other than our
own Chicko sensei. View pics on sensei's Blog at

Hello Everyone,
During January there is chance for those that are interested to be
introduced to the Aunkai method. Rob John, who is one of the top
students in this method is looking to come out to Australia for some
quality relaxation and is keen to hold some small informal workshops
while he is out here.
For those who aren't sure what Aunkai is all about have a look at
some of the stuff available on youtube. Akuzawa Minoru, the guy
behind this method has been featured in the Aikido Journal and has
been the subject of quite some interest on the Aiki-web in recent
times.
Here is the website and a blog that describes some of what Aunkai is
about;
http://www.aunkai.net/eng/http://charlie-and-cliff-in-japan.blogspot.com/2008/10/day-10-ueno-
and-aunkai.html
Scroll past the first part of the blog for the interesting stuff.
If you still aren't clear on what this Aunkai stuff is all about then
it is basically are form of exercises that are some what similar to
yoga that are used to build a martial body, with all of the goals
that are found common to asian martial arts, relaxed body, strong
middle, balanced and centered.
Anyway, if you or your club are at all interest please let me know.

Hello,
A small group of us (from various arts/styles around the country) are
planning a series of two 2-day weekend workshops which will be
conducted by Mike Sigman.
At this stage, nothing is concrete as we are canvassing general
interest in such a workshop. However, two workshops are being planned
for - one in Brisbane, and the other in either Sydney or Melbourne.
Each workshop will run over a full weekend (6 hours each day Sat and
Sun). It is envisaged that the cost per 2-day workshop will be
$200/person. The workshops will be limited to a maximum of 30
participants each, to ensure quality instruction and more one-on-one
time with Mike.
If there is sufficient interest in an Aikido-specific workshop, the
content will cover the following material:
1. the basics of "ki" and "kokyu" movement/training
2. "Kamae" and the concept of central equilibrium
3. these basics as they pertain to traditional Aikido exercises (e.g.
kokyu-ho, fune-kogi-undo, happo undo, wrist exercises, suburi, etc.)
4. how to use these basic concepts in a testing format between 2 people
5. "Holes", balance and "floating" (e.g. how to apply kuzushi on contact)
6. Use and application of these basic concepts through some basic
(Aikido-specific) technique examples
7. More practical examples of using these basic concepts and how to
manifest them through the "Divine Will"
8. Exercises that will help dramatically increase your kokyu power
If there are insufficient numbers to warrant an Aikido-specific
workshop, the content will be more generic and equally
applicable to ALL martial arts, such as karate, taiji and
judo/jujitsu.
For those of you who are wondering who is Mike Sigman and what does he
know...
Mike Sigman has more than 45 years of martial training in judo,
Okinawan karate, Aikido, Taijiquan, and many other Chinese martial
arts. Since 1975 Mike has devoted his time to gathering information
and training methods for the body skills surrounding all the physical
abilities of ki/kokyu/jin power and in the conditioning methods (both
hard and soft) that are involved in the body/mind training of
breathing methods.
Mike was the editor/publisher of "Internal Strength" magazine and has
written numerous articles and given numerous workshops for the last 15
years in the U.S., Australia, Europe, and Scandinavia.
Mike has recently been asked to write a series of articles for aikido
journal these can be viewed at

Hi Catherine,
Many thanks for the notice about Maruyama Sensei's Melbourne
seminar.
Unfortunately for me at that time this year happens to be
right in the middle
of the pilgrimage period that I will also be training in
Japan . I haven't quite worked out how to be in two places
at once as yet,so again I have to miss out. It seems the
eastern seaboard of Australia always gets the
benefits. (Maybe one day if the SA people get past their
petty politics we can get an open minded martial arts group
of sufficient size to warrant a visit from Maruyama
Sensei.)There are a number of us in SA who would be very
supportive and appreciative of such a visit. In the
meantime it is expected that another aikijujutsu and systema
seminar/workshop will occur in late Aug or early Sept. Next
time I meet with John Ward Sensei, I will discuss with him
the necessary logistics of the possibilty of having Master
Koretoshi Maruyama
visit Adelaide.
Kind Regards
Dante
