Seishi one and all. Was lucky enough to be able to enjoy a class at Desert Wind
Aikido in Las Vegas last week. Its the only Aikido dojo in the town two blocks
north of the "strip", $8 taxi fare (& one of the students will always drop you
back to your hotel), $10 class fee.It was my first time at a different style
(apart from Yuishinkai / Ki society) the warm ups were similar , toitsu taiso
was a bit slower than what I have experenced , and not as many exercises. The
techniques and responses were much the same as any class I had ever done (theres
probably a greater difference between the senseis than the styles?) none the
less a nice dojo & youre made to fell very welcome . If youre in the town
(everybody should visit once in a lifetime) take a class. Thier web-site is

Hi all,
I still have a few copies of Persimmon Wind, by Dave
Lowry, and Memoirs of the Warrior Kumagai, by Donald
Ritchie for sale. I grabbed them last year a
remaindered book shop, so they're dirt cheap - $4 for
Persimmon Wind, and $5 for Memoirs (in hardback).
Persimmon Wind is about Dave's journey to Japan and
his training in traditional kenjutsu and iaijutsu. It
is very evocative of Japanese people, coutryside, and
culture, has some great info on training in the koryu,
and some great stories - such as when he visits Yagyu
village. While not about Aikido training per se, I
think it helps put training in the arts in
perspective.
Memoirs of the Warrior Kumagai is a novel, and has
been heralded as one of the most historically-accurate
depictions of the bushi and their time - by both
Western and Japanese readers. Far better than the
'Shogun' type fare.
For more in-depth reviews of both, check out
www.koryu.com (Which, as one of the best-researched
martial arts websites, and with heaps of free articles
and reviews to download, is worth checking out anyhow.
. . It's put together by Meik and Diane Skoss, who
lived in Japan and trained in Aikido and various koryu
for years.)
If you'd like a copy, let me know. Both normally
retail for around $30 - $40. I don't need to sell them
at a profit - I'm just passing them on at the price I
paid for them. (I grabbed them to keep them in
Aikidoka circulation, and to keep them from being
pulped!)
If you live in Brissie, let me know if you want to
meet up. Otherwise, I'm happy to post them to anyone
in Australia, and get a cheque back from you for the
book and postage cost.
Cheers,
Mark Trudinger (Hill End Ki Society Dojo)

Hi Peter,
OK its not Melbourne but there is an Aikido Yuishinkai seminar in Brisbane
in March (seminar flyer uploaded recently). At the end of the seminar there
will be some bell misogi practice lead by Williams Sensei.
Further there is some information about this and other misogi practice in
the recently published aikido yuishinkai student guide. You could probably
thumb a copy at the Newport/Williamstown Aikido Yuishinkai dojo in Melbourne.

Hello All
As mentioned in September my dojo Aikido Ryushinkan and Aikido Kenkyukai NSW
are hosting Yasuyuki Suzuki 6th Dan return visit to Australia for summer
training. Suzuki Sensei of is one of Takeda Sensei's senior teachers and has
made numerous visits to Australia over the years.
The training in Sydney will be from 27-29 December at the Aikido Kenkyukai
Balmain Dojo. Training in Melbourne will be at Aikido Ryushinkan Dojo in
Hawthorn 30th December to 2nd January (Yes we will be training on New Years
Day - how better to celebrate the New Year than on the mat.)
These seminars are an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in
Takeda sensei's approach to Aikido practice.

Hi Guys,
Sorry to have missed the Dave Brown seminar, is there any chance someone
can post a bit of a seminar review.
BTW
The wedding (my sisters) in Sydney was great. Also it was good to meet up
with Andrew Sunter for a personal tour of Kings Cross, a bit of aiki chat
as well and line to him up to teach at the griffith aikido club in Brisbane
next week.
cheers,
dan

Hi Gabby,
Yes I think this is a good opportunity for beginners (everyone) to fill
that empty cup to overflowing (or get a bigger cup). Weapons is integral to
our art and a good shomen cut makes for a great ikkyo I'm told. The seminar
will be structured to start with basics concepts and build from that to
adv. aikido weapons practice and vice versa.
Maruyama sensei's art, as transmitted to Williams sensei is evolving
considerably with some fascinating insights from the koryu sword schools,
(particularly the shinkage-ryu) along the way, though I'm some what biased
I guess :)
cheers,
dan

Hey all,
For information on the seminar please go to Central Station, knock on
locker no 144, speak to Agent Aiki73 and await futher instructions.
He will have the code...
...
I have sussed it out. There is no seminar. LOL
Robbie Sensei is visiting for an instructors meeting and obviously,
as he's come all this way, has been asked to be a guest instructor at
Hill End Dojo this Sunday. There's no theme, there's no special new
teachings from Japan, he is coming as a Ki Society instructor to
teach 2 classes at a Ki Society dojo, just like Thom Sensei might
teach at South Bank dojo one night etc.
There are two sessions - 1pm - 2:30 & 3 - 4:30pm. All are welcome.
Please arrive at 12 to help put out the mats.
Sorry for the confusion - I am usually the one who posts news on Hill
End Dojo stuff but I've only just come back to training from a 3
month break and wasn't sure what was going on myself.
Cheers,
Gabby

By keeping their seminar a secret, the Brisbane Ki Soc mob have
everyone's best interests at heart. Afterall, there are some of us out
here with heart conditions; we wouldn't want to risk the
over-excitement associated with such an awesome display of precision
technique and enlightening insights.
Seriously, why close your doors if you've nothing to hide? Every other
style on the list seems to have an "all welcome" policy...
