Hi all,
I still have a few copies of Persimmon Wind, by Dave
Lowry, and Memoirs of the Warrior Kumagai, by Donald
Ritchie for sale. I grabbed them last year a
remaindered book shop, so they're dirt cheap - $4 for
Persimmon Wind, and $5 for Memoirs (in hardback).
Persimmon Wind is about Dave's journey to Japan and
his training in traditional kenjutsu and iaijutsu. It
is very evocative of Japanese people, coutryside, and
culture, has some great info on training in the koryu,
and some great stories - such as when he visits Yagyu
village. While not about Aikido training per se, I
think it helps put training in the arts in
perspective.
Memoirs of the Warrior Kumagai is a novel, and has
been heralded as one of the most historically-accurate
depictions of the bushi and their time - by both
Western and Japanese readers. Far better than the
'Shogun' type fare.
For more in-depth reviews of both, check out
www.koryu.com (Which, as one of the best-researched
martial arts websites, and with heaps of free articles
and reviews to download, is worth checking out anyhow.
. . It's put together by Meik and Diane Skoss, who
lived in Japan and trained in Aikido and various koryu
for years.)
If you'd like a copy, let me know. Both normally
retail for around $30 - $40. I don't need to sell them
at a profit - I'm just passing them on at the price I
paid for them. (I grabbed them to keep them in
Aikidoka circulation, and to keep them from being
pulped!)
If you live in Brissie, let me know if you want to
meet up. Otherwise, I'm happy to post them to anyone
in Australia, and get a cheque back from you for the
book and postage cost.
Cheers,
Mark Trudinger (Hill End Ki Society Dojo)
