To Whistle Or Not To Whistle?
Things You Didn't Know About Things You Know Well
Referees must make quick decisions, and the luxury of time to think it over, look it up or discuss it with someone is not an option during the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions:
What should the referee do and how is play restarted if a blue team defender, under pressure from the red team attackers,
1. Juggles the ball into the air with his feet and then heads it back to his goalkeeper who catches the ball with his hands inside the blue team's penalty area.
2. Juggles the ball into the air with his feet and then heads it back to his goalkeeper who does not catch the ball with his hands but controls the ball with his feet.
3. Kicks the ball into the air to another teammate who bounces the ball off his knee back to his goalkeeper who catches the ball with his hands inside the blue team's penalty area.
4. Attempts to kick the ball downfield away from his goal but miss kicks the ball and his goalkeeper dives on the ball with his hands to prevent it from entering the goal.
A friend of mine, Tom Hasbrook, from Buckhannon, West Virginia told me a true story once about an AYSO game and asked me what I would have done if I were the referee.
Six year old Billy, got the ball and started dribbling (kicking and running after) the ball toward his own goal. The parents started yelling, "Turn around Billy, you're going the wrong way!" Of course Billy paid no attention and kept on going and the parents kept on yelling. As Billy got near his own end of the field, he was actually closer to the corner flag than he was to the goal so he kept on dribbling (kicking and running after) the ball right across his own goal line and on to the adjacent soccer field where another game was in progress. At last, Billy heard the parents yelling, so he turned around and, to the joy of everyone watching, shot the ball directly past the surprised goalkeeper into the goal on the adjacent soccer field.
Tom asked what I would have done as the referee. I thought for a moment and said, "I would have joined in with the parents laughter and cheering, congratulated Billy for scoring the "goal" and restarted by declaring a refreshment break so everyone could recover and savor the moment." What would you have done?
