Ask The Coach... Everything You Wanted To Know But Were Afraid To Ask Coaches have to deal with all sorts of scenarios week in and week out. Each week John will address a question that has been sent in by an AYSO coach. This week's question is:
"My U-10 daughter's coach starts practice with the team shooting on goal. With myhigh school aged son, we have been taught that shooting takes large muscles and should not be done without a proper warm up. Am I correct and how do I approach the coach without being a know it all?"

| Training Activities Spotlight "Shooting" Is An Activity For A U-12 Team
"Shooting" works on passing and shooting skills for U-12 teams. You will need 12 or more soccer balls and one full sized goal.
Organization: Using half of a soccer field or a 50 by 50 yard grid, have one keeper, and then form two lines using the remaining players. One group of players, the Shooters, should each have a ball and line up 40 yards from the goal. The other group of players, the Defenders, should line up on the goal line six yards from the goal post (it doesn't matter which side).
How The Game Is Played: The first Shooter in line runs to the penalty spot, checks back toward the Shooting line, receives a pass from the next Shooter in line, turns and shoots on goal. As soon as the ball is played to the Shooter, the first Defender in line should race toward the Shooter to prevent him/her from scoring. Have the players rotate positions so the Shooter becomes the Keeper, the Keeper moves to the Defending line and the Defender moves to the Shooting line.
Variations: Move the location of the Shooting line to the right or left to change the shooting angles.
