Thanks! John Ouellette AYSO National Coach |
Ask The Coach... Everything You Wanted To Know But Were Afraid To Ask Coaches have to deal with all sorts of scenarios week in and week out. Each week John will address a question that has been sent in by an AYSO coach. This week's question is:
"If an AYSO team is comprised of 13 players, and all the children are available to play on game day, are we allowed to have a 'team' program that asks a random player to not play because the coaching staff wishes to go into each game with 12 players?"

| Training Activities Spotlight "1, 2, 3 Red Light" Is An Activity For A U-6 Team
To see a video of this training activity, please click here.
"1, 2, 3, Red Light" is a game that most young children are familiar with, so by putting a little soccer twist on it, your U-6 team can work on their dribbling skills and have a little fun. All you need is four cones to mark a grid and a ball for each player.
Organization: Create a 20 X 30 yard grid marked with cones. All players are required to play within the grid and each player must have a soccer ball.
How The Game Is Played: The coach stands on one endline (the Finish Line) and the players are spread along the opposite endline (the Start Line). When the coach turns his back to the players, the players must dribble toward the Finish Line. At some point, the coach yells "1, 2, 3, Red Light" and then turns around.
At that point all players must have stopped the ball with the sole of their feet. Anyone seen moving is sent back to the Start Line. Once again, the coach turns his back and the players dribble toward the Finish Line. Repeat this until one player reaches the Finish Line and wins the game.
Variations: Allow players to only use their left foot, right foot, outside of right or left foot, or use inside of both feet.
