To Whistle Or Not To Whistle?
Things You Didn't Know About Things You Know Well
Referees must make quick decisions, and the luxury of time to think it over, look it up or discuss it with someone is not an option during the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions:
What should the referee do and how is play restarted, if a blue team player kicks the ball back towards the blue team's goalkeeper from...
1. A direct free kick for the blue team just outside the blue team's penalty area, and the blue team's goalkeeper misses the ball completely and it goes directly into the blue team's own goal?
2. An indirect free kick for the blue team just outside the blue team's penalty area, and the goalkeeper attempts to control the ball but it deflects off the goalkeeper's hands into the blue team's own goal?
3. A direct free kick for the blue team just outside the blue team's penalty area, and the ball is intercepted by a red team player in an offside position who kicks the ball into the blue team's goal?
4. An indirect free kick for the blue team just inside the blue team's penalty area, and the goalkeeper miss kicks the ball and it goes into the blue team's own goal?
Many of us can recall a special moment in a soccer game that remains vivid for years, if not a lifetime. Mine occurred while refereeing a U-14 girls game on a bright October afternoon. Upon grasping the familiar round object, I immediately came to my senses and dropped it, yelling, "Play!"
Soon afterwards, the defense sent the ball to the halfway line, giving me the opportunity to raise my arms, hailing for all to hear, "I'm sorry...Okay?!!" The laughter coming from the touchlines gave me solace; crisis averted. A referee colleague was one of the head coaches in this game and I doubt he'll ever let me forget it, until I do something worse. Perhaps, next season, I'll perform a header into the net...
