To Whistle Or Not To Whistle?
Things You Didn't Know About Things You Know Well
Referees must make quick decisions, and the luxury of time to think it over, look it up or discuss it with someone is not an option during the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions:
What should the referee do and how is play restarted, if...
1. The referee blows her whistle for half-time, and then the assistant referee points out to the referee that she allowed the first half to continue four minutes too long?
2. The referee blows her whistle for half-time, and then the assistant referee points out to the referee that she ended the first half four minutes too early?
3. The referee blows her whistle and abandons the game seven minutes early because of lightening, and the red team wants to know who wins because they are ahead?
4. The referee blows her whistle and awards a penalty kick for the red team with only a few seconds remaining in the game but time expires before the penalty kick can be taken?
As the AYSO National Referee Administrator, I often receive inquiries regarding rules, regulations, policies, interpretation of FIFA Law and AYSO modifications. The following are some questions recently received:
1. During the pregame player equipment inspection, the referee notices that a player is wearing small metal studs in her ears and the player explains that she just had her ears pierced and is not permitted to remove the studs for a week. What should the referee do?
2. During the pregame player equipment inspection, the referee notices that a player is wearing a padded headband and soft wristbands. What should the referee do?
3. During the pregame player equipment inspection, the referee notices that a player is wearing a metal knee brace to strengthen a weak knee joint. What should the referee do?
4. During the pregame player equipment inspection, the referee notices that a player is wearing shoes with cleats where the configuration of the cleats includes a single toe cleat. What should the referee do?
