To Whistle Or Not To Whistle?
Things You Didn't Know About Things You Know Well
Referees must make quick decisions, and the luxury of time to think it over, look it up or discuss it with someone is not an option during the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions:
The blue team's goalkeeper is out of position and a red team player shoots at the unprotected goal. A blue defender inside his own penalty area uses his shinguard to cover his hand and deliberately attempts to prevent the goal by hitting the ball with his shinguard. What should the referee do and how is play restarted if:
1. The ball is deflected directly into the blue defender's goal?
2. The ball is deflected away from the goal and out of play across the blue team's goal line?
A few years ago, I was an assistant referee for a new referee who was doing his first U-10 game. Everything was going well until the goalkeeper came out to the edge of the penalty area and punted the ball straight up in the air. Of course everyone watched the ball, which came right back down to the goalkeeper who caught it. I immediately raised my flag to indicate a foul had been committed, but I forgot what the foul was, so I lowered my flag. The referee had already blown his whistle and looked over at me to see what I was going to signal. Since I wasn't signaling anything, he allowed the goalkeeper to punt the ball again.
At halftime, the goalkeeper's coach very politely asked us what happened. We admitted we had made a mistake, and had no idea what we should have done. The coach thanked us for our candor and returned to the sideline. We later figured out that I had been technically correct in raising my flag since the goalkeeper had released the ball into play and then touched it again before it was touched or played by another player. The restart should have been an indirect free kick for the attacking team. Fortunately our error didn't affect the outcome of the game, and we survived.
Referees do make mistakes just as do players, coaches and spectators. Admitting to the occasional error encourages honesty and respect and may even help with the game control.
