Tips For Coaching Your Own Child
Reprinted From Playsoccer Magazine

By Mike Woitalla
It's one of the greatest delights of parenthood. I don't recall it mentioned in any of the guide books while preparing for fatherhood or that it came up in the words of encouragement from friends or family. It's the magic of seeing the world through your child's eyes.

If you're lucky, you might coach your child's soccer team.

Warming Up As A Team
Keep It Short, But Do It

Young players must get used to warming up and stretching. Our youngest players' muscles are not developed to a point where injuries will occur very often, but it is critical that even U-6 players be introduced to the concepts in order to prepare them for competition in the years to come.

WARM UP THE MUSCLES
Before stretching muscles and other body parts, they must be sufficiently warmed up. This requires aerobic activities that get the heart pumping and lungs breathing above a resting rate. Ideally, these activities should include a ball and be related to the technique(s) you will be working on during the activity. Activities should not be speed oriented, but should cause players to move.

STRETCH THE MUSCLES
After an aerobic warm up, players must stretch their muscles in order to avoid injury. Stretch slowly and evenly extending each muscle just to the point the body naturally resists. Movements should be steady and gentle.

Raise Ten Dollars
For A Chance To Travel To Spain

AYSO and FC Barcelona are asking for your help to save children's lives. Encourage your players and teams to join in on the More Than a Club: Kick It to Malaria campaign.

This is a simple program. Your players ask family, friends, neighbors and anyone else they can think of to pledge $1 for every game that s/he plays in this season. Every player that raises a minimum of $10 will automatically be entered to win the grand prize: a trip to Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain as guests of FC Barcelona!
