To Whistle Or Not To Whistle?
Things You Didn't Know About Things You Know Well
Referees must make quick decisions and the luxury of time to think it over, look it up, or discuss it with someone is not an option during the game. Test your knowledge and see if you can answer the following questions.
1) An attacker on the red team shoots and the blue team's goalkeeper deliberately controls the ball by parrying it to the ground, then dribbles to the top of the penalty-area, collects the ball with his hands and punts the ball toward the half-way line. What should the referee do and how is play restarted?
2) A substitute for the red team, while sitting on the bench, throws a shoe at a player on the blue team who is standing on the field of play near the half-way line while the ball is in play. What should the referee do and how is play restarted? For answers, click here. |
Tales From The Pitch
Mental Match Preparation Jon Rogers, Referee Administrator, Section 12:
A few years ago, I took a team to a "friendly" tournament (no standings) where I also volunteered to referee. At the end of my team's second match of the day, I ran to referee a U-16 boys match to which I was assigned. I dashed onto the field and started the match. All seemed well until a fight broke out in the second half. After the game, I was bothered by my performance in what I expected to be a low intensity "friendly" match.
As I thought back, I realized that I had not taken any time to prepare for the match mentally including the fact that they were, after all, U-16 boys! I was preoccupied with the matches my team had played and didn't focus on the task before me as referee. Had I been better prepared mentally, I might have noticed the trouble coming and been able to prevent it.
We, as referees, must prepare mentally for each match and focus on the job before us. We owe it to our players to give our best, and preparing mentally should be a significant part of that effort. |
