The Caloundra Classic was won by John Hardy with Greg Bury runner-up. The plate went to John Philpott with Tony Hall runner-up. There were 16 competitors in the Classic, 4 with grade 2100 or better and 7 with grades between 1830 and 2100. Triples were completed by Les Watson (2),Tony Hall (1), Greg Bury (2) and Les completed a straight triple.
Players received their tournament programs three to four weeks in advance and competitions were managed in large blocks.
Throughout the tournament the hoops were set at 3 11/16, were very firm in the ground, but due to the long wet spell prior to the event they were easier to run than under normal conditions. The court speed started around the 11 to 12 second and became faster each day as the surface dried out.
Events 3 (0.5 to 3.5), 5 (7 to 9) and 6 (10 to 14) all had 9 competitors in their blocks. The various winners were John Byers (Caloundra), Ross Preston (East Brisbane), Nick Cram (Maleny) while Neal Preston (East Brisbane) won Event4 (4 to 6) and Len James (Toowoomba) won the 16 to 20 event.
All up we had 51 competitors from 20 clubs and it was very encouraging to have 9 players nominate for the handicap 16 to 20 event.
The club was disappointed that no recent players nominated for our "Virgins" which had a free entry, cash prizes and two games a day program. We probably will give it a try one more time in 2010 before we drop the event.
