First day of Australian Presidents 8's

Kevin Beard
4 October 2008

The Australian Croquet Association President's 8's began yesterday (Friday) at the Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea in Melbourne.   The format is a double round robin with a random draw.  The events will be played over 4 days.  The events and a summary of the results for the first day's play (3 rounds) are below.  Full results can be found at:

http://www.croquet-australia.com.au/Results/2008/eights/

The courts at VCC have continued to improve and the variation between the courts has been markedly reduced.  The fastest and best courts are still the four in front of the club house (courts 1-4).  These have lights.

The three courts to the left of the clubhouse (courts 5-7) are a little slower but nothing like as slow as they were for the major events last year.

The three courts to the right of the clubhouse (courts 8-10) are in the worst condition with some reports of missed roquets due to the court. These are the original courts sown to bent grass 9 months before the the remaining courts were sown to Santa Ana couch.  These will eventually be sown with Santa Ana.

The two distant courts behind the centre courts (courts 11-12) have been improved dramatically and don't warrant the 'Siberia' tag any more.  Charlotte Morgan completed a triple against Creina Dawson on Court 11 - her third triple in ranking events.

The weather started out sunny and mild in the morning with some wind and showers in the afternoon.  A moderate day for Cairnlea.
