Congratulations to Kenneth, Mike K and Clayton. Mike and Clayton were elected as
"Directors at Large" and will fill the two new positions.
There are now 7 board members:
President: Kenneth
Vice President: John
Secretary: Dwight
Treasurer: Tom
Director at Large: Don
Director at Large: Mike
Director at Large: Clayton
I believe the club is very fortunate to have Kenneth back and involved again as
President. Many of you know that Kenneth was the president of the club for years
and helped keep it going and growing through the 80s and 90s. Kenneth has
mentioned that he wants to get even more involved than he has been in the past
with more coaching, exhibition events, and starting programs with schools. He is
willing and able to dedicate the necessary time to the these efforts, and the
club needs that now more than ever. It's an exciting time now that we're in the
larger building. The club will definitely need to take on a new "atmosphere"
with attention focused more on the general market and getting more novice
players through the door (and coming back). Kenneth understands that, and I'm
sure he is up to the challenge. Mike and Clayton are also great additions and
have contributed a good deal of volunteer work at the new building.
It's been an honor to serve with the Board of Directors for the past few years.
I'm proud to have been a part of the big reorganization and the planning and
implementation of the new building. I only have a few hours a week to spend at
the club, but I'll continue helping out as much as I can to finish my current
projects and any new ones that pop up. See you at the club!
Sincerely,
Joe

We're holding a novice clinic this Saturday from 10a to 1pm at the new facility.
This is for novice players to get introduced to the club, learn the basics of
the strokes, and learn more about the sport. It's free to monthly members. The
daily fee applies for non-monthly members ($7 adults). The fee pays for the
whole day. Send an email to codes@... for an autoreply with
new location info and the new gate code. Email information@...
if you need more information.
Also, there's a posting on the forum for a "never been used" STIGA table so go

See you Saturday!
Joe
Please come and support your table tennis club by helping move the tables to the
new facility on Saturday April 4th. We will be meeting at Uncle Bob's at 9 am
and loading up tables. We hope to be able to open up for regular play by 1 pm
with everyone's help. Call Tom at 419 9550 if you have questions or
suggestions.
The club will be open for play at Uncle Bob's as usual until Saturday, April 4.
Saturday morning we're moving the tables. The new club will be open for play at
1pm Saturday. Feel free to come early and help out.
The new facility is on the south frontage road of 183 just east of Burnet. If
you're going north on Burnet you would take a right at 183, then look to your
right for the entrance just before the railroad tracks, behind Sherlock's. Look
for the AAA Storage sign and pull in there. If you pass the RR trax you missed
it.

Hi Everyone!
We've had quite a few postings to this list lately that would be better served
by forum software. In a forum, you get better back-and-forth communication, and
you have a lot more control over what and how you read. (On the yahoo group,
messages are just blasted out to all the list members no matter what the topic.)
I've installed one of the popular, free software packages and the other board
members and I have done some testing.
You register by selecting a user name and entering your email address. Then you
confirm the address. I know, it's yet another Web account to create. But, I
think you'll enjoy it. We'll post club announcements on the "ATTA Info" forum as
well as here on the yahoo group (for a while). I'd like to phase out this yahoo
group after we get a good base of users on the forum.
Take 2 minutes to sign up, then contribute by posting or asking a question.
There are only a few messages there already from the testing we did.
You can "subscribe" to forums or individual "topics" so you get an email
notification when there's a new post. That way you don't have to keep checking
in.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please email
information@.... It's very new, so I may still need to adjust
some of the settings.
Thanks,

I haven't made my way back to the club, but I will, one of these days.
But I have been reading the various posts, and have enjoyed any email with the word spin, table, whatever. Its hard for non-afficianados to appreciate this fantastic world of pong.
Ken, that was an incredible post. You recreated the action for us. All of you, job well done.
Its been a few years but I remember drilling with John M. Mind you, I only did that when I was having one of those 'good days'. John kept me honest, and forced me to focus and exercise consistency.
Ken I've played with you a few times as well---and I quicky lifted a lot of serving tricks from you;
Best regards to all,

Jon Dorn, John Miller and myself went to the Newgy tournament on Saturday. It looked as if it had a good turn out , but I don't know the exact numbers. We all played well but started off slow. We all got to playing better as the day progressed . We have John Miller playing a match against a 1890 player and it is one of the most impressive displays of play I have ever seen at any level. He lost the match but you will have to see it to believe it and it will be posted on the internet. I played in 1700 , 1950 and doubles. I was expecting to be the 3rd seed in my first group of 1700 but was the top seed. I advanced #1 and progressed 3 rounds but lost to a player rated 1407. Before the loss to him I had been beating all my opponents fairly easily in straight game. His name is Chiesel is mainly a defender type style. As I was mainly playing a counter game he didn't give me anything to counter and I lost in 5. I have hopes he will be re-rated because last I talked to him he was still progressing in the 1700 finals. John Miller played in the u-1500 , u- 1700 and u-1950. He came out of both 1500 and 1700 and went into the 2nd round. John M amd I also played 3200 doubles where we lost in the first round to a father and son team at 11-8 in the 5th. I had hopes we would do better but I was still playing a little too passive at that time, putting a lot of pressure on John to hit the winners. We will do better next time.In the 1950's John had a match that was purely incredible. I can't do it justice so we will just let everyone watch it for themselves. In my first round of the under 1950 I lost to the A- player --- 11-9, 11-6, 16-14, 13-11. i played my best match of the tournament against this young man but lost a close one. In my next match I played another young man rated 1693 and won that match in 5 games. It was my best win of the tournament. We only had 3 in our group so I advanced. I lost in the next round 13-11,11-6, 11-7 ,this players was not only good but was smart and after the first game changed his tactics and almost shut me down completely. Now to Jon Dorns' play . Jon was playing at a very hight level by the end of the tournament but finally had to default his final matches in the under 1950 because of back problems and fatigue. He played Doubles and with his partner progresses several round before loing to Mark H and his partner. He played in u- 2150 and came out to play 2080 chopper and lose to him in an exciting match that match old stlye smashing again a new style chopper. Jon was excellent with his drop shots and smashes but lost a close match. In his first round he beat the c and d players in his group but lost to the a player(2030) in another close match which he could have won. In the 1950 s Jon beat everyone in the first round fairly easy and was doing the same in the second round when his back started hurting. I attribute most of our fatgue and physical problems to poor planning on our part. We didn't bring any food or drinks and didn't have anyone to send out so from 8 am to 8 pm we had only water to drink and no food. Next time we will plan better.
We all had a lot of fun and looking forward to next time. i promise it won't be another 8 years before I attend another.

Kenneth summed up the day pretty nicely. The brilliant match
John Miller played is the best I’ve seen him attack ever. Many of his shots
and counters were, in my opinion, close to a 2200 level of play. I dumped the
video yesterday and bad news. I did not get the match on tape. I don’t
know what happened, thought I was taping it. My eyesight is poor looking
through the small b/w viewfinder and I guess I didn’t have it on record. I
am so disappointed in myself. I am sorry John.

Both of those tables look like a great deal. It's going to be in your garage so
I would highly recommend a cover if one doesn't come with it. I keep my garage
spotless and the dust accumulates like crazy. I would get the least expensive
one and use the difference for a table cover. That will make the playing surface
last longer.
Or save the money and come to the club more often (bring the kiddos). nothing
worse than texas heat in the garage.
Victor
So, based on my budget, I think I have narrowed my purchase down to two tables and I was hoping you guys could steer me one way or the other. Or recommend any other alternatives in this price range.
The Stiga Spark available at walmart.com, has a 3/4inch top, 2inch square steel legs, 2inch steel support apron, and 3inch wheel casters. With walmart.com, shipping is free if I do site to store, so after tax I'm looking at about $380. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4058107
Or, the Stiga STS175 which also has a 3/4inch top, 2inch steel support apron, 3inch wheel casters, but it differs from the table above in that it only has 1.5inch square steel legs. Although, the undercarriage systems seems to be a little more heavy duty, and I like that the legs are fastened to the undercarriage unlike the independent legs on the walmart.com table. I can purchase this table for $399 from the online vendor below, which includes shipping. http://ttpioneers.ping-pong.com/Product.php?ProductID=HT8501
Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated!

This is basically a question on how to return servers in general
because almost all servers will have spin.
Basic strategy:
From my experience, the best way to get keep control of the return is
to reverse the direction of the spin on the ball. i.e. if you get a
backspin ball, chop it back. Trying to add to the same direction of
spin on the ball will be a topspin return, which is more difficult.
This technique I think gives the best chance of putting the ball back
in play, however, it may not give you the best chance of winning the
point. ... but at least you won't lose immediately by hitting the
ball out or in the net.
If you want to return the ball, such that, you'll be favored to win
the point, is a complex question that I'm not prepared to answer ...
I'll leave that to a better player to answer :)

Also something basic, but that helped me, is knowing that whatever direction the server's bat is heading at the time of contact is where the ball will want to go when you return it. Downward contact means the ball will have backspin and will want to go down into the net when you return it -- push that ball back (wedge the ball on the underside), or loop it, or flip it (when you're ready). A serve that brushes across the ball toward one side will make the ball go to that side when you return it -- aim your return to the opposite side to counteract the spin. When you get used to doing this, and start playing higher level players, the trick is being able to see what's happening at the time of contact.
Practice against someone who has good serves. A couple of points
that may help you:
1.Only pay attention to what direction the paddle is moving at the
point of contact, not during the swing. This takes some practice.
2.Relax your grip when returning spinny serves.
3.Take a half a step back away from the table if the serves are
long enough, contact the ball a little later, let some of the spin deteriorate.
4.If you don’t have access to another player but have a
table, practice your own serves as it will help you understand the spin of
other players.
Hope this helps,
Jon Dorn

I think waht evryone would like is longer rallys instead of 3rd or 5th ball kills. It was many years ago before they lowered the net from 6 3/4 inches to 6(to help out the offensive players I might add) that defensive players were king of table tennis and there was long rallys many lasting minutes. Now I heard some stories about going to lunch back then and coming back and the players you were watching were on the same point. now that is too long, but wouldn't it be nice to see more countering and using strategy to win. I do believe that when the 40 mm ball was approved that the original idea was to slow things down so rallys would last longer. The opposite has happen with even faster play and also more mistake prone because the 40 mm ball is unstable. So the points are even shorter than when the 38mm ball was used. If they are going to continue to experiment, then lets raise the net back to 6 3/4 inches and see if that works. Let us have a 3rd person put the ball in play so we don't have to worry about illegal serves. Oh, i have a better idea, if you are right handed you play with your left and if left handed play with your right. no that will not work, we do have people that are good with both hands. maybe we should have another end line on floor and everyone must serve and play from behind this line (say 6 foot from end of table). If the ball you hit doesn't travel past the end line you lose the point. Maybe set the net to 3 feet so you have to lob over it.
Just kidding !!!!!!
I have really only one thing to say to the ITTF. You have messed up the game I love enough. Leave it alone.

I am not quiet clear of the use of chemicals but one thing I am sure that the more and more high tech are being used in the all kinds of sports. The Greg Letts blog talks about this and has a link to the ITTF "explanation" letter.
There are some insightful comments at the bottom of the page -- I especially liked the one from Jay Tuberville.
In my opinion it probably all comes down to money, and the decision makers are being influenced by the manufacturers. They must see more profit in producing "enhanced" rubber than they do in selling glue -- plus as one commenter pointed out, there are low cost alternatives to speed glue so the mfctrs, make no extra money.
I like the idea of no chemicals in a sport -- less science more equality, but that's not realistic. It seems this way in every sport though. The science races to improve performance -- golf clubs and balls, track shoes, tennis racquets, skis, toboggans, pinewood derby, whatever. Competitors want faster, so manufacturers have a market. Science will always play a part. If everyone had to use the same bat, participation would suffer and we definitely don't want that!
I'm trying to think of any other sport that allows a player to put a chemical or any type of performance enhancing solution on their equipment. Maybe there is. Anyone?
I was searching for the reason of the 40 mm ball : ), and the reason behind the struggle on one hand to slow the game down and on the other to speed it up.also opinions on equipment and how it effects the sport from tables, height of net, rackets, scoring, and rubber. We on one hand ban some rubbers but not others with the same characteristics. We ban all types of glue or anything that changes the supposed playing charateristics of rubber and then manufactors bring out rubber that "replaces" glueing. They say for our health but they brought out speed glues that were water based and they were banned too. I am looking for the reason behind the supposed reason. And I like how you get that my opinion is because I am older, well maybe I am older but that has nothing to do with my opinion. I am still not blind, at least not totaly.

Yeah, that will happen, you will get taken
to the cleaners, but you might be surprised at the payoff if you stick with it.
It took me two years to win a single match
in a club like this…stick around…what your looking for exists at
the ATTC if you want table tennis in your life.
Like anything else, it takes discipline
unless you’re a natural…and I’ve only seen a few of those in
my life. But I have seen them.

looking to improve
Hi There, New to Austin,
last played Ping Pong in High School Ten
Years ago - Would like to Pick back up again. Looking to Play at least
once a week with someone who's a beginner and looking to Improve their
game. If I dont get any responses, I guess I'll just go down to the
ATTC and get taken to the cleaners =)
We have coaching on Monday and Wednesday nights for $10.00(for 3
hours each night, 6 to 9 pm) if you are a ATTC member. If you are
not a member it is $15.00. We have players from beginners to
advanced practicing on these nights. Also there is every level of
player at the club on regular nights, so don't be intimidated , come
on out and have fun. We all started as a beginner, just some don't
remember sometimes.

Welcome to the list! There are almost always other novice players at
the club, so don't feel like you're always doomed to defeat by going.
Plus, we have a free novice clinic on the second Saturday of the
month. The novice clinics are a great way to learn and practice with
other players around your skill level. (We had to skip the last two
clinics, but we'll be back on next month -- stay tuned to this list).
We also have coaching available Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm hosted
by a regional coach, Ken Beauchamp, who has coached many of us at the
club.
In any case, if you want to be a good at table tennis, you'll have to
be able to get "cleaned" and learn from those cleanings.

bjcn,
Some of these new tension rubbers make looping effortless, fast and
spinny. so while you may have to change your stroke slightly, I don't
think by much. mind you this is just the looping stroke. the new
tension rubbers do affect the short game.
One of the guys at the club had this to say when he tried the Numbus.
wow, I don't have to swing as hard yet the ball jumps off the paddle.
May not be an exact quote but close enough. he was trying my paddle
since we have the same one but mine has a straight handle.
if you can, see if a member at your club has one of these new rubbers
and try it for yourself. they are pricey though. I treat mine like a
rare collectable comic to prolong the life of the rubber.
