Re: [ATTA] returning defficult services

Also something basic, but that helped me, is knowing that whatever direction the server's bat is heading at the time of contact is where the ball will want to go when you return it. Downward contact means the ball will have backspin and will want to go down into the net when you return it -- push that ball back (wedge the ball on the underside), or loop it, or flip it (when you're ready). A serve that brushes across the ball toward one side will make the ball go to that side when you return it -- aim your return to the opposite side to counteract the spin. When you get used to doing this, and start playing higher level players, the trick is being able to see what's happening at the time of contact.

Practice against someone who has good serves. A couple of points that may help you:

1.       Only pay attention to what direction the paddle is moving at the point of contact, not during the swing. This takes some practice.

2.       Relax your grip when returning spinny serves.

3.       Take a half a step back away from the table if the serves are long enough, contact the ball a little later, let some of the spin deteriorate.

4.       If you don't have access to another player but have a table, practice your own serves as it will help you understand the spin of other players.

Hope this helps,
