In a great show this night the Steelers beat again the Chargers (as they
did during the regular season) going ahead in their playoff run.
After a false start in which defenses dominated the scene and the two
teams exchanged nothing more than punts, at the end of the first quarter
finally Romo found Colston for a nice 49 yds TD pass.
But Favre in the following drive was able to complete a 23 yds pass on a
3rd&18 with San Diego defense clearly expecting his throw. Then "Pete
the Greek" quickly gained yds in front of a shocked San Diego team and
only a blocked PAT left the Chargers leading 7-6 after an easy Burress
TD catch.
Later Favre completed 3 passes in 4 plays to bring the Steelers to a
13-7 lead (the TD was caught by Driver). However the Chargers were able
in the next drive to cover 69 yds in 4 minutes and Romo found Furrey to
fix the score to 14-13 just before the end of the first half.
In the second half San Diego had the first possession and orchestrated a
good 8 minute drive but were not able to get a TD and settled for a
Bironas FG.
Then Hester decided to return the kickoff for 63 yds; thanks to a bloody
penalty against Winfield the Steelers kept their drive alive and finally
Favre found again Burress in the end-zone to take again the lead.
After a SD punt and a 3&out by PIT the Chargers came again close to the
opponent end-zone but only scored another FG to tie the game at 20-20.
Coach Pete made the difference in the following drive, being able to
perfectly manage the clock: after 7 minutes, two runs by Kenny Watson
were decisive: 27-20 with 44 second left. In the last desperate assault,
without any timeout left, Romo fumbled and his colleague Favre had only
to kneel down to let the clock expire.
This is the end of San Diego adventure in the ASL. I inherited a good
4-0 team, was able to win 8 more games and was not so bad also in this
last show. I really enjoyed playing in this League and have to thank all
the guys that played in unusual time slots to help me with the time zone
difference. See you next season, it will be difficult to do better, but
I'll try hard!
Cheers to all and thanks again to Pete for the great game.
Roberto.
