Got another question...

on a LD ride, coming into the vet check is it customary to pull the
saddle?

I'm reading Ridecamp and I'm noticing that on a 40 minute hold many
people say they come in, pull the saddle, sponge the horse and then
present for a pulse. Is this normal? So far at the one ride I've done
we came in, I let Codee drink as much as she wanted (took maybe 5
minutes) went over and did the vet check. I just ran my stirrups up
and loosened the girth and let her graze and drink her fill until it
was time to leave. Granted, this was the Okmulgee Cougar Prowl this
year and things didn't go exactly as the RM expected (we had an out of
camp check). From what I understand the L&S ride will have all checks
in camp.

Is it better for the horse to be unsaddled? Codee doesn't seem to care
what's on her as long as she's getting to eat.

If you think about it, a horse can cool faster when the maximum surface area is exposed to the air. Removing tack does this. The effect is most noticable in...

The average saddle is going to cover about 200 sq inches of surface, with an additional 50 for pad. The major cooling for horses comes through heat exchange...
