As our car preparations continue for future California LeMons events, we have run across a few questions regaurding the theme.
1. Most of the drivers on our team are in some way or another in a band. With that said, if our theme was somehow music orientated would we be able to set up and play some live music (so long as it is approved by Jay and the LeMons Judges) on the premises? I know there are noise ordinances...so?
2. In addition to, or standing alone, can we have in car audio for others to hear (approval of said music can be by Jay and LeMons Judges)? Again, noise ordinances permitting.

there is a sound ordinance due to the a$$hole on the hill that actually has DB meters . That's a Jay question but would be cool ,what kind of music?

I think you're thinking Altamont? Or does that asshole's brother live in
Willows?
THill has some signage for noise, but I've never seen anyone busted for
sound there. This includes an obnoxiously loud rx-7 with a straight
pipe.
Music varies. One guy plays in cover band...Rolling Stones, STP, and other music you would hear at a dive bar. Another guy plays in a jazz band...Swing, Latin, etc.. I play a little bit of everything. LeMons looks like a good time...perhaps some music could just add to it!
I'll wait on the Jay ruling.
Thanks Miles

I think as a rule, most racetracks' reactions to the questions below are "no" and "Good God, Hell NO," but I've forwarded these to Thunderhill anyway and await their response....--JL

You live life beyond your PC. So now Windows goes beyond your PC.See how
This past Friday, when I flew in for the race, someone busted the window
of my rental and got my laptop, ipod, in-car cams an a bunch of other
person crap. To top it all off we were in the Scirocco that never made
it onto the track (just another kick in the nuts for the weekend).
I need to send my insurance company a police report for the claims, but
apparently Houston PD will take up to 2 weeks to mail it to me.
Is anyone close to downtown and would be open to running to the PD,
grabbing a copy and faxing/mailing to me?
I know it's a pain in the ass, but it'd be very much appreciated.
Send me the info to my personal eMail and I'll go get it for you.

Ok, looking at the rules (and me being totally new at this) what exactly constitutes a "drivers seat"?
"3.2: Driver's Seat: Driver's seatback must reach above middle of helmet
or higher. One-piece SFI- or FIA-rated competition seats very strongly
encouraged."
I see that SFI- or FIA-rated competition seats very strongly
encouraged, but does that mean that a stock seat is ok? Do I need to weld something?
I ask all of this because our team has some drivers that vary in height quite a bit. If I can't use the stock seat, I would like to find an adjustable seat that would work. Please don't just say "get the race seat..." I want to know why, and what is required of the rules.
Thanks in advance

If the top of the seatback of the stock seat comes to the midpoint or higher
on the helmet of all your drivers, then yes, you can use the stock seat.
The rules say that purpose built racing seats are strongly encouraged, but
it does not say they are REQUIRED. What IS required is spelled out in the
first sentence of the rules.
Seriously, this isn't rocket surgery. The rules say what they mean and mean
what they say. If Jay wanted to require SFI/FIA rated seats, it's be super
easy for him to write a rule that made purpose built racing seats the
requirement.
But, he didn't.

You can get sliders to bolt onto aftermarket seats for just about any
car. I was lucky enough to find a company that made an adapter to bolt
aftermarket seats onto the factory sliders, so our seat installation
was literally bolt in.
In my opinion it's a worthwhile investment to get a decent seat. Apart
from the safety factor, dedicated racing seats will hold you in the
car much better than any stock seat. Having to brace yourself with
your arms and legs when going around corners can be very tiring, as
I've learned from tracking my street car. Having a good seat that can
hold you in properly is a good thing.
We went with a Corbeau seat and are very happy with it.

The ones we've done using the stock sliders (which were much more sturdy than the ones on the Corbeaus we use) the attachment points on the race seat put it much lower than the stock seat, however you may need more (or less?) clearance depending upon your drivers torso length *and the helmet*, so when doing the fab consider these points. We have blocked spacers and moved our seat a little higher. You can also put taller blocks in the front than the rear to get a lay back stance if you want.

I actually stayed away from the Corbeau sliders after hearing your report of their flimsiness. Found a company that makes adjustable side mount brackets that bolt onto the ///factory sliders. Works great, and in my case I had to mount the seat in its lowest position (and laid the seat back) to fit my ogre-like proportions, plus offset it slightly to the side to clear the cage.

We have blocked spacers and moved our seat a little higher. You can also put taller blocks in the front than the rear to get a lay back stance if you want. >
For strength factor make sure there is a backsupport bar behind seat so the adjustable seat doesn't break

Seriously, this isn't rocket surgery. The rules say what they mean and mean what they say. If Jay wanted to require SFI/FIA rated seats, it's be super easy for him to write a rule that made purpose built racing seats the requirement.

Thanks,
That clarifies my next lame question "so what about the headrest?". Looks like we are looking for a seat. Any suggestions on ones that slide front to back?

Any race seat can be mounted to stock seat rails to make it adjustable (with a little welding...). We also failed to get a homogeneous clone team, so we have to adjust our seat too.
How hard this is depends on your car. On our CRX, the stock seat rails bolted to the bottom of the stock seat. If yours are integral to the seat, things will be harder. You also may have difficulty with headroom if your car is all racy and low and stuff. I scratched up the top of my helmet in the CRX, but in our new Miata, we had to raise the roof AND lower the floor.
OK, I hear your need. Next time at MSRH the track will host a team
band competition on Saturday night. Details to be worked out.
Something simple, low entry fee, 50% to charity, 50% back to the top
three. All members must participate, but one "ringer" can be brought
in. ;)
